WINNER OF WEEK 111 world/folk music:

"Weeting Fair" by Straight Furrow !

Band History

Straight Furrow started life in 1990 as a barndance band working the village halls in Norfolk. Since then and after some personnel changes, their unique style, musicianship, versatility and sheer entertainment value have led to them being recognised as one of the leading Celtic style bands in East Anglia. They are still absolutely committed to barndances and play many weddings, parties and public events throughout the year. They have now broadened into performance and recording with a strong Internet presence and many CD sales. Straight Furrow continues to develop as a creative force in the musical scene.

Reviews

GODS OF MUSIC This scholarly clan plays a tune with precision and grace. It was so sweet and subtle, I experienced a brief shiver. Not every dreamy Celtic tune will trigger this phenomenon in me. The song "Lovely Joan", as arranged by Straight Furrow, has traditional roots but Jon the wind player in the group has added his own variation in the middle. An interesting thing about the recording is the warmth and authenticity it bears, even with light use of a synthesizer in the mix. The artists avoided any temptation to overly flower their playing or recording. Their understatement is enviable. The tone achieved by the wind player is top notch and that's the centerpiece of this tune. I will be revisiting the music of Straight Furrow again. Thanks, Randall Throckmorton, Gods of Music.

I daresay this is the most astounding Celtic music I have ever heard on mp3.com, and it is surely among the best I've heard anywhere else as well. Straight Furrow has taken guitars and flutes and mixed them to form a beautifully cohesive piece of folk music that is worth treasuring. It is no wonder this song has done as well as it has on the charts. Musically sound and well crafted, this piece is so exceptional because of the way the instruments play off each other. . Give Straight Furrow a lot of credit here. They've managed to take two 17th Century O'Carolan melodies and craft them into a tune that is their own, without losing any of the inherent beauty. I'll be back to this page again and again for more, and I expect to hear great things from Jon, Brian and Susan. Give this song a listen today, you won't forgive yourself if you don't. Jonathan Sanders, Gods of Music.

Live at the King William30 January 2001 A very different, though very enjoyable, evening at The Willy. .....was accompanied by much tapping of feet and clapping of hands. It wasn't all Irish and Folk Music, though, with a good variety of material which included a splendid version of "Here Comes the Sun". A Semi-acoustic Guitar, Keyboards and Bodhrán backing to Jon who alternated between Electric Guitar, Mandolin and Recorder. I have a feeling they will be back

Winner of
the 10:th Final

Shelley Dael Walker

This multi-talented singer/songwriter performs to captivated listeners, who often describe her voice as "angelic."
Shelley's first band, Grass Roots, released two records while Shelley was still in high school. The band reformed as Ireson’s Ride, releasing one full-length recording which garnered both local and national critical acclaim. At this time, Shelley’s music was prominently featured in seminal alternative disc jock Marco Collins’s weekly local Seattle Area program, The Young and the Restless on 107.7 KNDD, the same station who broke bands such as Nirvana and Beck.
Her first solo EP, precluding her forthcoming full length, quickly received airplay on 103.7 The Mountain. Shelley’s debut solo album, Stitches and Skin, is a collection of skillfully written and delivered songs that are lush, innovative and memorable.
